Dr. Cori Green Selected to Serve on USNWR Best Children's Hospital Working Group for Behavioral/Mental Health

Dr. Cori Green

We are pleased to announce that Cori Green, M.D., M.Sc. has been selected to serve on the 2022-2023 Best Children’s Hospital Behavioral/Mental Health working group, an initiative developed by the U.S. News & World Report (USNWR).

Dr. Green is the Director of Behavioral Health Education and Integration and Associate Professor of Clinical Pediatrics in the Department of Pediatrics at Weill Cornell Medicine. She was nominated by her colleagues at Weill Cornell Medicine and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital for her ongoing contributions in changing care for patients and families, and improving the education programs for trainees and faculty at Weill Cornell Medicine.

In 2010, Dr. Green was awarded a grant from the Association of Pediatric Program Directors (APPD) to explore the experiences and attitudes of pediatric residency directors nationwide regarding mental health education, and locally to explore Weill Cornell Medicine residents’ attitudes towards mental health care, resulting in two publications. She received a Community Access to Child Health (CATCH) grant from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) to explore and link with community resources for mental health. Due to her increasing visibility in this area, Dr. Green has been invited to work with both the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) and the AAP on policy statements, to develop education sessions, and in various other leadership capacities.

In addition, Dr. Green worked with the ABP to create a national survey of pediatric residents assessing their perceived competence in caring for children for mental health problems, and also developed a survey for pediatric subspecialty fellows to assess their attitudes around mental health care and training. This work resulted in several publications in peer reviewed journals. She currently receives funding from the ABP to analyze their periodic data from board examinees related to mental health education and training.

Dr. Green contributes to national initiatives as a member of the AAP’s Mental Health Leadership Workgroup. She is a lead author on their policy statement articulating mental health competencies for pediatric care and worked with the AAP to create and analyze national surveys around mental health care for practicing physicians. Dr. Green is also on the faculty for the national REACH and the New York State Child and Adolescent Psychiatry for Primary Care (CAP PC) programs to educate primary care pediatricians regarding identification and treatment of patients with mental health concerns.

As Director of Behavioral Health Education and Integration, Dr. Green has developed a successful mental health education program for our trainees and faculty. She has built a large data repository of patients from 2006 through the present, which will also contain prospective data. The goal is to use this database to assess rates of screening for mental health problems, identification, treatment, and access to care. As Dr. Green implements educational and technological interventions, she will evaluate clinical changes in care based on providers frequency of promoting positive parenting practices, screening for early risk factors for healthy emotional development and early symptoms of mental health problems, performing diagnostic assessment for positive screens, and initiating first line treatments as indicated.
