From rising mental health needs, increasing costs of care, and growing misinformation, the challenges facing children and families today are complex and urgent. Yet as we look toward 2026, we are fueled by optimism and hope.
Here are five developments we’re looking forward to in 2026.
1. Prevention moving upstream
Pediatrics is increasingly shifting from crisis-driven care to prevention. More departments are embedding early identification, mental health promotion, and family support into routine pediatric practice. Intervening earlier helps build and strengthen resilience before challenges escalate.
2. Behavioral health as core pediatric care
Integrated behavioral health continues to expand across pediatric settings. Collaborative care models, co-located services, and stronger clinic–school partnerships are helping normalize mental health care and reduce stigma for children and families.
3. Partners as a credible voice in policy and advocacy
Pediatricians, families, and communities collaborate to shape local, state, and federal policy on children’s health, vaccines, research, Medicaid, and social determinants of health, strengthening relevance, trust, and impact across the spectrum of children’s health.
4. Re-centering the whole child
There is renewed recognition that child health extends beyond the absence of illness. Joy, play, connection, and belonging are increasingly understood as protective factors and essential components of healthy development.
5. Workforce wellbeing recognized as child health infrastructure
Academic medical centers, children’s hospitals, and clinics alike continue to prioritize clinician and staff wellbeing, recognizing that sustainable, compassionate care for children depends on a supported pediatric workforce.
Pediatricians are uniquely positioned to lead in myriad factors related to children’s health, not only in treating illness, but in advancing equity, prevention, and joy as fundamental components of child health. We will continue to lead with evidence, empathy, and imagination. We are grateful for the trust families put in us, and we look forward to a healthy new year ahead.
