This Epilepsy Awareness Month, our pediatric healthcare providers teamed up to provide recognition to patients and families facing a diagnosis of epilepsy. The duo introduced patients to the purple pumpkin, the symbol of epilepsy awareness, to encourage conversations about the disease.
The purple pumpkins allow patients to engage in role reversal, giving them the opportunity to manipulate equipment that is used for their care, by performing the same medical care, such as placing vEEG leads on their pumpkin. This form of role reversal allows pediatric patients mastery over their experience and serves as an educational platform for kids to learn more about their diagnosis or admission.
Participating families also receive educational materials about the latest research in epilepsy and articles on how to disclose this diagnosis with others.
