April Fellow Spotlight -- Ahsan Uddin, M.D.

Dr. Ahsan Uddin is a second-year fellow in the Pediatric Endocrinology Program. He attended medical school at St. George’s University School of Medicine and completed his Internal Medicine-Pediatrics residency at Beaumont Health in Michigan. Dr. Uddin splits his clinical time with research as part of the Meyer-Teruel Lab with a focus on steroid-induced obesity and metabolic dysregulations.

Why did you pursue a fellowship at Weill Cornell Medicine?

My wife is born and bred in Brooklyn, NY, so after I completed my residency in Michigan we had planned to come back to NYC to settle down full-time. When looking for a program for fellowship, I wanted to be at a hospital with a record of excellence in patient care, a strong clinical training program and broad opportunities for research.

What do you enjoy most about the fellowship program?

The pediatrics endocrinology program represents one of the strongest with regards to clinical training and provides for broad opportunities and experiences with its close ties to CUMC, MSK, HSS and Rockerfeller University.

What inspired you to choose a career in pediatric endocrinology?

Endocrinology was not originally part of my career plan but I happened to fall in love with the specialty when I did my rotation during residency. I was intrigued not only by the broad pathophysiology but also the clinical applications of it. Furthermore, as someone who has training in Medicine-Pediatrics, I highly value continuity of my relationships with patients, and in endocrinology, we tend to have long treatment relationships.

We live in a fortunate time during which many endocrine problems have viable treatments that allow patients to continue to live healthy uninterrupted lives as long as they are able to stay on their treatments.

Do you have any clinical or educational interests?

My primary interest is to have a clinical practice that is blended between pediatric endocrinology and primary internal medicine. In such a setting, I would also be able to continue to provide care for my young adult patients with paediatric endocrine problems who have transitioned and need an adult provider.

I have always valued teaching, particularly medical education, and would like to be able to continue helping both medical students and physicians-in-training on their journeys.

What are your career goals?

After graduation, I would like to continue working in an academic setting to gain more experience before eventually transitioning to a private practice.

Do you have any advice for those thinking about joining a pediatric fellowship at Weill Cornell Medicine?

Weill Cornell Medicine is a great place to do fellowship. You are given excellent opportunities for education and research here and the hospital system supports a strong physician well-being program as well.
