On June 20th, the Department of Pediatrics hosted its annual Department Awards Celebration to recognize colleagues for their work in improving children's health. The award ceremony acknowledged the exceptional contributions and dedicated efforts of department members in various areas, including clinical care, education, research and administration.

Master Clinician Award

Srishti Nangia, M.D.

Dr. Srishti Nangia was awarded the Master Clinician Award for her outstanding and innovate care of children with epilepsy, including those who require epilepsy surgery.

Junior Faculty Research Award

Andrea Heras, M.D.

Dr. Andrea Heras was awarded the Junior Faculty Research Award for her translational research in sphingolipid metabolism and asthma and her balance of clinical and research responsibilities, peer-reviewed publications and ability to establish collaborations. Dr. Heras also serves as mentor to more junior faculty and trainees.

Quality and Patient Safety Award

Physician Assistant Team

The PA team was awarded the Quality and Patient Safety Award for their involvement and dedication to patient safety and quality. They have been a driving force and leaders for several QI Initiatives that have already demonstrated an improvement in patient outcomes including implementation of the Early Onset Sepsis Calculator (EOS) and improving glucose screen for high-risk neonates for hypoglycemia along with introducing one of the most effective intervention “Dextrose Gel” to another of our campuses. The latest QI initiatives to highlight are focused on accurately identifying mothers who have Chronic Hepatitis B infection and administer Hep B vaccine and IgG in a timely fashion and implementation of the newest AAP Hyperbilirubinemia Guidelines.

Quality and Patient Safety Project Support Award

Zenna Solomon, M.D. and Catalina Acosta Orozco, M.D.

Dr. Zenna Solomon and Dr. Catalina Acosta Orozco were awarded the Quality and Patient Safety Project Support Award for their QI initiative to implement the NYP Pediatric Asthma Acute Exacerbation Pathway in the NYP Weill-Cornell ED, inpatient units and PICU.  This project aims to provide comprehensive interdisciplinary staff education on the implementation of the pediatric asthma respiratory score and pathway to standardize and improve the care of patients with acute asthma exacerbations. They will evaluate the effectiveness of their implementation program by measuring patient outcomes, process measures and balancing measures within a RE-AIM implementation framework.

Employee Recognition Award in Education

Ms. Carlene Bryan

Ms. Carlene Bryan was awarded the Employee Recognition Award in Education for her dedication to the fellows and the overall educational mission in the Department of Pediatrics. She has enhanced the oversight of fellows’ education as a whole and improved their experience in scholarly activity. In addition, she has contributed to educational administration in other areas including undergraduate medical education when the need arose.

David H. Komansky Annual Senior Fellows Clinical Research Award 

Eric Wilsterman, M.D.

Dr. Eric Wilsterman was awarded the David H. Komansky Annual Senior Fellows Clinical Research Award for his multisite cohort study evaluating airway management in patients with Trisomy 21 in the pediatric intensive care unit.

David H. Komansky Annual Senior Fellows Translational Research Award 

Lauren Robinson, M.D.

Dr. Lauren Robinson was awarded the David H. Komansky Annual Senior Fellows Translational Research Award for her work characterizing the anti-RBC immune response in childhood-onset systemic lupus erythematosus.

Ms. Janet Lam was awarded the Employee Recognition Award for her diligence, positive attitude and willingness to go the extra mile.
