Dr. Kimberley Chien Promoted to Associate Professor of Clinical Pediatrics

The Department of Pediatrics is pleased to announce the promotion of Kimberley Chien, M.D. to Associate Professor of Clinical Pediatrics, effective December 1, 2022.

Dr. Chien is an Associate Attending Pediatrician at New York-Presbyterian Komansky Children’s Hospital and New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center.  She is board-certified in pediatrics and pediatric gastroenterology.  She received a B.S. in Neuroscience at Tufts University and earned her medical degree at SUNY-Downstate Medical College of Brooklyn.  She completed her pediatric internship and residency training at NYU School of Medicine and attended New York-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center to complete fellowship training in Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition.

While Dr. Chien cares for a variety of patients with various gastrointestinal disorders, she is devoted to improving the quality of care for pediatric IBD patients. As Director of the Weill Cornell Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease Transition Program and Research Registry, she developed the first pediatric IBD transition care program in the tri-state region.  Deemed a favorite by Weill Cornell pediatric IBD patients, Dr. Chien has created a patient education night, “NewYork-Presbterian/Weill Cornell Medicine (NYP/WCM) Adolescent IBD Transition to College Night” to help adolescents with IBD and their families prepare for managing their disease during university years.  Her expertise has been sought out by regional pediatric GI divisions to advise on the development of their own pediatric IBD transition programs.  Dr. Chien also participates on various national IBD transition committees to develop patient-centered programs and research initiatives for all pediatric IBD patients.

Dr. Chien seeks to improve IBD care by increasing national awareness of the important and potentially deadly complication, Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) in pediatric IBD.  Together with Dr. Dr. Nicole Kucine, an associate professor of clinical pediatrics at Weill Cornell Medicine, Dr. Chien has studied this complication in various capacities. Their work has been published and cited in the premier pediatric GI publication, Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition (JPGN).

In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Chien believes in the importance of shaping future physicians and participates in medical education.  She greatly enjoys being a Clinical Mentor in the Essential Principals of Medicine course for Weill Cornell first year medical students.  Dr. Chien is also the Developer and Course Director of Foundations in Pediatrics subspecialty elective which allows medical students to get further exposure to pediatrics.  Her dedication was recognized with an award in Excellence in Medical Education in the Pediatric Clerkship.

Dr. Chien hopes to not only improve the quality of life of her patients, but also the quality of life of her colleagues near and far. At Weill Cornell Medicine, she is member of the Weill Cornell Department of Pediatrics Wellness Committee and a department representative for the Weill Cornell Wellness Champions Committee.  In her pediatric GI community, she spearheaded physician wellness efforts at the North American Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition (NASPGHAN) by leading research to recognize physician burnout in pediatric gastroenterology.  Her work has been presented at the NASPGHAN Annual Meeting and was recently published in JPGN.   Dr. Chien was recognized as a future leader who values the professional needs of pediatric gastroenterologists worldwide and was made Vice-Chairwoman of the NASPGHAN Professional Development Committee in 2022.
