The trajectory of human health is established in childhood, and the costliest diseases of adulthood have their origins in early life. Yet, innovations in pediatric health are infrequently targeted towards and slow to be implemented, as demonstrated by the recent slow roll out of this century’s most impactful intervention, mRNA vaccines, to children. The Department of Pediatrics and the Gale and Ira Drukier Institute for Children’s Health at Weill Cornell Medicine have a strong shared goal of mentoring the next generation of physician and scientific leaders who will foster novel cures, therapies, and prophylactic interventions specifically aimed at pediatric populations. Thus, the Department and Institute have joined forces to pursue the creation of a research hub for promising early stage child health researchers who will receive the training, mentorship, resources, and opportunities that will support innovative and impactful research that will change the outlook of health for all children and the adults that they will become.
The Department of Pediatrics and Gale and Ira Drukier Institute for Children’s Health at Weill Cornell Medicine is seeking junior faculty physician- and PhD-scientists whose research focuses on improving child health. We are looking to recruit early-stage physician or PhD scientists across the basic, translational, clinical, and health services research spectrum who have an established track record of early career achievement to join the Department and Institute for the formative years of their career. Selected candidates will benefit from the rich, stimulating research environment provided by the current faculty and research portfolios, as well as the Tri-Institutional scientific community (Weill Cornell Medicine, Memorial Sloan Kettering, and Rockefeller University) and its top-notch training programs. Research Faculty/Physician-Scientist in the Department of Pediatrics
The Department of Pediatrics and Gale and Ira Drukier Institute for Children’s Health at Weill Cornell Medicine is seeking a junior faculty physician- and PhD-scientists whose research focus seeks to improve child health to join the Department at the Assistant Professor level in New York City on the Upper East Side. The Department and Institute are led by two premier pediatrician-scientists, Dr. Sallie Permar and Dr. Virginia Pascual, respectively, who have a strong shared interest in developing a cadre of child health researchers that will develop the next generation of therapeutics, prophylactic innovations, and cures that will improve childhood and life-long health. The Department and Institute have a robust complement of research faculty and portfolio of research programs that create a stimulating environment and collaborative network. Moreover, candidates will be in the center of a unique research and training environment created by the collaborations of the integrated and geographically-connected Tri-institutions of Weill Cornell Medicine, Rockefeller University, and Memorial Sloan Kettering.
Competitive candidates will have a significant track record of research training and career goals focused on child health research. Successful candidates will be accomplished investigators, with a strong publication record and documented experience in teaching, mentoring, and leadership. Individuals will be independent clinician or PhD scientists with active research interests, technical expertise, and success in acquiring early-career funding. Qualified candidates are expected to contribute to the research, teaching, and/or clinical missions of the Department and build and sustain an externally-funded independent research program consistent with the Department’s vision, assist in the recruitment of other funded investigators, and enhance collaborations and research opportunities for the trainees and faculty of the Department.
Candidates will be evaluated based on their publications, potential to maintain an externally-funded research program, and the degree to which their research intersects with other members of the Department, the Institute, and the Tri-Institution community. The candidate will be provided with research engagement, protected time, financial support, and space.
We are particularly interested in candidates who have excellence in the areas of immunology, microbiology, vaccines, neuroscience, cancer biology, cell biology, human genetics and gene therapy that are complementary to our current research portfolio. The Department and Institute’s areas of strengths in research currently include: neonatology, infectious diseases, immune-mediated diseases, microbiome, neuroscience, asthma, epigenetics, gene therapy, and oncology, among other areas. We will consider applications from any postdoctoral or clinical fellow, full- time, regular Instructor or Assistant rank faculty at Weill Cornell Medicine and outside institutions.

The Position
The research faculty responsibilities will include the following:
- Develop and advance a robust, independent, extramurally-funded research program that addresses child health.
- Develop and conduct original research within multidisciplinary teams of highly productive investigators.
- Develop an innovative basic, translational, clinical, or health services research program in child health.
- Help lead departmental research endeavors and mentoring.
- Secure extramural funding to support child health research. Collaborate with external industry and academic partners in scientific consortia via the resources provided through the Tri-Institutional Community.
- Generate, summarize, and present results in internal and external meetings to a variety of audiences. Lead and contribute to the writing of scientific reports and publications.
- Foster communication with crucial collaborating investigators. Promote teamwork and an environment of excellence in all interactions with colleagues, subordinates, and leadership.
- Find and disseminate practical, science-based solutions to address an array of pediatrics-related public health problems.
- Coordinate the activity of a research team and hold full accountability for projects.
The ideal candidate should have:
- An M.D., M.D./Ph.D. or Ph.D. degree, with demonstrated ability to lead and collaborate with investigators from different disciplines.
- Postdoctoral research experience.
- An exceptional record of achievement in basic, translational, clinical or health services research as demonstrated by scholarly accomplishment in the form of prior research publications, local and national presentations, and/or clinical trial leadership experience.
- An active clinical area of interest.
- A strong record of primary and/or senior author, high-impact publications.
- A track record of early-career funding.
- Demonstrated commitment to education and mentoring of next generation scientists.
- Excellent interpersonal, teaching, mentoring, leadership and, if applicable, clinical skills.
Assignment
- Compensation commensurate with FTE, area of expertise, and extramural support.
- Effort to fulfill the requirements at least 60%-75% research with a career commitment to research.
- Robust institutional start-up funding to ensure protected time for research, research personnel, and research supplies and equipment needs.
- Tenure track appointment in the Department of Pediatrics, with potential appointments in relevant basic science departments.
