The Department of Pediatrics is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Duncan Hau to Associate Professor of Clinical Pediatrics in the Division of General Academic Pediatrics, effective October 1, 2024.
Dr. Hau is a graduate of Cornell University and Tufts University College of Medicine. He completed his Pediatric Residency training at NYP/WC. Dr. Hau has additional education as a member of the Leadership in Academic Medicine (LAMP) and having completed the Advanced Certificate in Clinical Translational Investigation programs offered by Weill Cornell Medical College. Following his residency, he worked for the AIDS project of Baylor College of Medicine and as an attending physician at the Bugando Medical Center in Mwanza Tanzania, a training site for NYP/WC pediatric residents. He joined the faculty of the Department of Pediatrics at WCM in 2014.
He has worked closely with investigators at Bugando Medical Center in Mwanza, Tanzania studying medical and social determinants of post-hospital outcomes for over 500 children after discharge. This work identified rates of post-hospital mortality (10%) that exceeded in-hospital mortality (8%) as well as at-risk populations resulting so far in two publications in PLoS One, one as the first and one as the last author. Based on this work, he received a clinical research pilot award from the Department of Pediatrics that he used to develop a program designed to reduce post-discharge mortality. This program was highly successful and was published in the Journal of Pediatrics. He has also received funding from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research to expand this work. Building on this work and his commitment to global health, Dr. Hau has further studied the impact of the WCM global health program on the education of the WCM pediatric trainees.
Dr. Hau has been extremely active in teaching and mentoring medical, students and residents at Weill Cornell Medicine and in Tanzania despite the demands of his busy clinical commitments. Including teaching as part of a Cornell Ithaca undergraduate course and being the course leader for the pre and post experiential learning for the pediatric residents who go to Tanzania. Additionally, he served as the Director of the Pediatric Hospitalist program at our site at Lower Manhattan Hospital since 2016. Over the years, he has assumed taken on more leadership roles both at Lower Manhattan Hospital and the Alexander Cohen’s Hospital for Women and Newborns as the associate director of the nurseries at both locations.
We are delighted about Dr. Hau’s accomplishments and promotion to Associate Professor and look forward to his future achievements at Weill Cornell Medicine.
